Floor plan from image: turn a picture of a plan into an editable 3D plan
No sign-up · free · in your browser
Upload an image of a floor plan (PNG, JPEG or WebP), enter the apartment’s area for scale, and ApaPlan detects the walls and builds an editable plan you can furnish and view in 3D. It is free, works in the browser and needs no sign-up; you review and correct the detected walls before creating the project.
What “floor plan from image” means in ApaPlan
Many people already have a picture of their floor plan: a developer’s brochure, a listing screenshot, a scan of a property document or a photo of a printed plan taken straight from above. Redrawing it wall by wall is slow. ApaPlan reads that image and detects the walls for you, so you start with a scaled, editable 2D plan instead of a blank screen.
It is important to be clear about what this is not. ApaPlan does not generate interior designs with AI, and it does not reconstruct a plan from ordinary photos of rooms. AI room generators create pictures; ApaPlan creates a measured plan with real walls that you can edit, furnish and walk through in 3D. The image is processed in your browser.
Which images work best
| Image | Result | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Clean digital plan (PNG/WebP screenshot) | Best | Use the largest version available |
| Flat scan of a printed plan | Good | Scan straight, with even contrast |
| Phone photo of a paper plan, taken from directly above | Usually workable | Avoid shadows and tilt; crop to the plan |
| Plan with heavy furniture, hatching or coloured zones | Needs more corrections | Adjust the settings and check walls carefully |
| Photo of a plan at an angle, or photos of rooms | Not supported | Draw the walls by hand instead |
Supported formats are PNG, JPEG and WebP. PDF files are not read directly — export the page as an image first. Automatically detected walls are horizontal and vertical; diagonal or curved walls are added by hand afterwards.
How to prepare your floor plan image
A few minutes of preparation saves much more time correcting walls later:
- Find the best source. A digital plan from the developer, estate agent or management company is better than a photo of a printout. Images up to 20 MB are accepted, so use the largest version you have.
- Photograph from directly above. If you only have paper, lay it flat in even daylight and hold the phone parallel to the sheet. Perspective distortion cannot be corrected automatically.
- Crop away the extras. Titles, legends, frames and furniture symbols are not walls. You can crop inside ApaPlan too, but a clean image gives cleaner detection.
- Find the area. Look for the total floor area on the plan or in the property documents before you start, and note whether it includes a balcony.
- Keep the original. The image stays in the project as a background layer, so you can compare the detected walls with the drawing at any time.
Why you enter the area
An image has pixels, not metres. To give the plan a real scale, you enter the total floor area of the apartment, in square metres, as stated in the plan or property documents (convert from square feet if needed: 1 m² ≈ 10.76 sq ft). Use the net floor area of the rooms — the sum of the floor inside the walls, without the thickness of walls or columns.
The scale is only as accurate as the area you enter and the drawing itself. After import, check one or two walls against a tape measure or the dimensions printed on the plan, and correct the length if needed. For a renovation or furniture order, measure the critical walls on site — the floor plan guide explains how.
Reviewing and correcting detected walls
Before the project is created you see the detected plan on top of your image. Typical checks:
- Gaps in walls. A gap may be a door, an opening or a column. ApaPlan tries to recognise door and window marks, but check each suggested type and change it if needed.
- Extra lines. Furniture outlines, dimension lines, legends and frames can sometimes be mistaken for walls — delete them.
- Missing walls. Thin partitions or pale lines may be missed — add them.
- Closed rooms. Rooms are detected from closed walls, so make sure every room outline is closed.
You can crop the image to the apartment, rotate it by 90°, and adjust settings such as brightness and wall thickness if detection is noisy. Detection is a set of image heuristics, not a guarantee: complex symbols and low-quality images need more manual work.
From image to 3D: what you can do next
Once the walls are in, the result is an ordinary ApaPlan project. You can set exact wall lengths and thickness, add or flip doors and windows, and furnish every room from more than 2,500 3D models, including many IKEA and Roca products with real dimensions. Switch to 3D or walk through the apartment in first-person mode, apply wall and floor materials, and download a renovation PDF with plans, room areas and a finish schedule.

Limitations to know
- Detection works on images of floor plans, not on perspective photos of rooms and not on hand sketches without clear walls.
- Dimension text on the plan is not read; scale comes from the area you enter.
- Automatic walls are straight and axis-aligned; diagonal and curved walls are drawn manually.
- Window sill and door heights cannot be seen from above, so default heights are used — adjust them if needed.
- The result is a planning model, not a survey: it does not replace measured drawings, permits or structural advice.
How to do it in ApaPlan
- Open the import. Open the ApaPlan editor and choose “Plan from photo” to import an image; no sign-up is needed.
- Upload the image. Select a PNG, JPEG or WebP image of your floor plan, crop it to the apartment and rotate it if needed.
- Enter the area. Type the apartment’s net floor area in square metres so the plan gets a real scale.
- Review detected walls. Delete false lines, add missing walls and check door, window and column types.
- Create the project and furnish it. Create the editable plan, check key dimensions, add furniture and view it in 3D.
Frequently asked questions
Is the floor plan from image tool free?
Yes. ApaPlan is completely free, with no subscriptions and no card, and the image import is included.
Do I need to sign up?
No. You can import an image and edit the plan straight away; the project is stored in your browser. Sign in with Google or email to save it to your account.
Can I make a floor plan from photos of my rooms?
No. ApaPlan detects walls from an image of an existing floor plan, such as a scan or screenshot. It does not reconstruct a plan from photos of rooms.
Which file formats are supported?
PNG, JPEG and WebP images. For a PDF, export the page as an image first.
Why do I have to enter the area?
The image has no real units, so the total floor area sets the scale. Check one or two wall lengths afterwards and correct them if needed.
Does ApaPlan use AI to design my apartment?
No. Wall detection uses image processing in your browser, and furniture placement is up to you. ApaPlan does not generate designs automatically.
Can I turn the floor plan into 3D?
Yes. After import the plan becomes a normal project with an interactive 3D view and a first-person walkthrough.
How accurate is the result?
It depends on the image quality and the area you enter. Treat it as a planning model and measure critical walls on site before ordering furniture or starting work.
